GIA Style Card: Ancient Beauty

Today’s look was primarily inspired by Dutch Touch’s kohl-rimmed “Eagle” makeup, Casa Del Shai’s Nefertiti tunic and the Art Gallery of Ontario’s King Tut exhibit (November 24, 2009 – April 18, 2010).

As a long-time Egyptophile I was excited by the February opening of Rezzable’s Digital Alchemy showcase, which featured beautiful furniture, avatar skins and clothing items inspired by the lifestyle of queens and pharaohs. The grace, elegance and downright luxurious excess of the upper classes is mesmerizing.

Despite the humid, sunny climate requiring simple lightweight clothing, ancient Egyptians – men and women alike – lived for ornamentation. All manner of precious and semi-precious metals and stones were crafted to adorn every inch of the body for decoration and or religious significance.

The ancient Egyptians were certainly ahead of their time. Thousands of years after the rise of Egypt, the fields of science, history and anthropology are still fascinated and confounded by many aspects of the culture – including the mystery of the construction of the pyramids. And many parts of the world are still far behind the customs of The Old Kingdom and The New Kingdom in terms of women’s rights and equality.

GIA Style Card: Living Dead Girl

Some critics say that blogging fashionists are mindless followers, wandering about in mobs and wailing on about the same trends as everyone else. A recent SLsecret postcard at Shopping Cart Disco brought this sentiment out, stating “Bloggers are like sheeps with no brains that just follow trends”. Where this may be an accurate statement for some, it is definitely not true for all.

In considering how to dress up for All Hallows Eve this year, I couldn’t ignore the zombie allegory. And the recent Zombiefest gave me the chance to get in touch with my undead side before the onset of All Hallows Eve.

Today’s style card is the fallen fashionista, once elegant and composed, now disheveled, having fallen victim to mob mentality and unoriginal thought. Her shambling gait, courtesy of Olive Juice, allowing her to follow the herd in constant search for what all Living Dead Girls crave: braaaaaaaaaaaaains.

Dear Fashionistas and Fashionistos: this Halloween one would hope that you would forgo a few accents of decorative flair and guard yourselves from the ravenous blood-lusting appetites of the ungodly undead with a firearm or two … and maybe a protective relic.

Happy Halloween.

GIA Style Card: Daughter of Oshun

For GLANCE International Agency
» Part of the summer wedding series

Your love engulfs me
As the harmattan overwhelms the heat
I will pledge a thousand favours to the wind
To courier my voice to your ears

Adumaradan, come close to me
So you can behold the honour of my presence

Since the day I set eyes on you
Since the day I had a glimpse of your beauty
Your love has ridden me like a horse of wild winds
I cannot sleep; repose is far from my eyes

Adumaradan, come close to me
So you can behold the honour of my presence

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hands of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, but not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

— Niyi Osundare (excerpt from Adumaradan*)

GIA Style Card: Marooned

@ GLANCE International Agency

The colour maroon has long since been worn by many Vajrayana Buddhist monks, depending their School and Dharma level. Though shopping at Casa Del Shai may be described by some as a spiritual or religious experience, it comes close, but does not yet compare to the ultimate awakening – Enlightenment. For those who have not yet experienced Casa Del Shai, I bring an enlightenment of sorts with today’s Style Card.

Designer Shai Delacroix’s Caroline Serpentine Gown comes in conservatively elegant colours: bridal white, silver-grey and merlot. Ideal for the red carpet walk, this off-the-shoulder gown with mermaid silhouette skirt is sure to conjure the  silky, sexy walk of Old Hollywood starlets.

Simple and alluring, “Caroline” is complimented by pearls and gold from Muse and Zaara, and a fanned bun hairstyle from ETD.

Shai’s uniquely hand-drawn range of creations for both women and men can take one seamlessly from the street or nightclub to the boardroom to the ballroom for spring, summer, fall, or winter-ready looks – easily making Miss Delacroix one of Second Life™’s most remarkable fashion talents.
